Wet Rot

What is it?

Wet Rot – Wet rot is a severe form of timber decay caused by fungal growth and has the potential to impact the structural integrity of your property if left untreated. The term ‘wet rot’ is used to describe a range of different species of fungi which are largely responsible for wood rot.

Why does Wet Rot Occur?  In homes that are affected by high moisture levels, wet rot can quickly establish.  Wet rot is commonly found in timbers that have become damp.

Underlying Causes – Presence of Wet Rot could indicate an underlying problem, such as a burst pipe or sub-standard insulation. At No. 1 Home, we don’t just eliminate wet rot – we also eliminate the source of it too.

Hard to Spot – In the majority of properties, timber is concealed behind plaster or cladding and this can make wet rot hard to spot. Fortunately, our professionals know just where to look and precisely what to look out for.

Unlike dry rot, wet rot doesn’t spread to unaffected areas and is, therefore, less destructive.  It is however, more common and can still cause severe structural damage if allowed to go unchecked.

    WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

Wet rot can be divided into two types – brown and white.  Due to the range of wet rot species, it can often be difficult to identify and is often mistaken by property owners for the far more serious dry rot. The correct identification of the rot is necessary as the treatment of wet rot and dry rot are different.

The signs of wet rot include but are not limited to the following:

    Damp Feeling Timber

    Darkened Timber

    Cracking and Flaking Timber

    Fungal Growth

    Weakened Floorboards

    Damp Musty Smell
